“The
people walking in my door have come to give me money, and, as
such, I am mighty glad to see them,” she explains. “There are
way too many fine restaurants in Louisville, from my point of
view, so I want to personalize my relationships with them.”
Shepherd is an important presence at Café Metro from 5:30 to 10
p.m. on weeknights and from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday. She’s either greeting customers, working the
restaurant’s three dining rooms or gracing the bar. She
estimates she knows about 65 percent of her customers. Many are
contemporaries Shepherd has known for years. But the new faces
get plenty of attention, too. Shepherd is laying the foundation
for a longer-term relationship.
Shepherd’s generous spirit extends beyond her restaurant. For
ten years she served on the Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue Overlay
Review Committee, which has tried to manage the growth and
development of that corridor for the best interests of residents
and business owners. She retired from that group in 2002, but
her continued presence as the face of Café Metro attests to her
commitment to provide fine food, gracious service and a lively
future for Bardstown Road, Louisville, and visitors. |
